Saint P.A.U.L.S. Inc. Residences (People Achieving Unbeatable Life Successes) opened its doors in May 2000 to males with high functional mental illnesses, displaced males with past substance abuse problems, homeless veterans, as well as senior citizens who were in transition between facilities. In the beginning our focus was solely based on providing males with a warm bed, a few drug related aftercare programs, three well balanced meals per day and a warm and caring staff that would help instill values and administer prescribed psycho tropic medication to our growing list of MICA clients who entered the facility. Because of our dedication to provide individualized services, extensive research and networking played an effective role in our clients’ successful rehabilitation.
As a result, we have built a relationship with the Bedford Stuyvesant community as well as other community-based organizations who share similar interests i.e., Veteran programs and hospitals., Medical Physicians, Case Managers, Housing Specialists, Counselors and Detoxification Clinics at local hospitals, Churches and Adult Day Care Centers which includes senior citizen apartment buildings.
Our mission is to provide homeless individuals, individuals with past substance abuse problems, mentally challenged individuals, or any displaced person who is in need of housing services, aftercare programs, and daily nutritional meals, in a safe and comfortable environment. Our mission is to provide homeless individuals, individuals with past substance abuse problems, mentally challenged individuals, or any displaced person who is in need of housing services, aftercare programs, and daily nutritional meals, in a safe and comfortable environment. We strive to give each client a second chance at life; to function in a working class society, as well as a purpose to set realistic and achievable goals.

We work with a diverse population who share the same needs but present unexpected problems due to their cultural differences.
However, we continue to develop the necessary skills through attending workshops and conducting weekly house meetings. We also assign house projects to small groups which are helpful in creating a sense of independence, unity and respect for each resident.
We have formed a welcome committee of our more successful residents to big-brother the new family members. This effort is very effective in providing a stronger support system within the residence. It also enhances the daily or weekly counseling or group meetings attended, thus, new clients discuss moments of strength/weakness, belonging, depression, anxiety, loneliness, low/high self-esteem, growth and freedom from drugs and alcohol. This group interaction is very helpful in identifying when our clients are at risk for relapsing or decompensate.

The dedication that Saint P.A.U.L.S. Inc. has for all of its past, present, and future clients are to help provide each individual with:
· Morals - Based on our rules and regulations, we motivate and teach each resident how to express ideas based on what is acceptable and non-destructive within a culturally diverse community setting.
· Spiritual - Each resident is given the freedom to explore and understand the principles of the religion, of his choice through pastoral guidance, etc.
· Educational - Residents are taught daily life skills such as personal hygiene, knowledge of medication, organizational and communicational skills, cleaning and some culinary skills, etc. In addition, through referral sources they are also empowered with job readiness skills.
· Financial -After our Directors assist each resident in obtaining monetary entitlements, we further teach them how to budge and monitor their monthly income entitlements effectively.
· Independent Housing Support -Through weekly individual and group meetings we help to combat fears and anxieties of independent living by allowing each resident to express his concerns and issues openly with group feedback.
Training is continuous throughout their stay at the residence. Saint P.A.U.L.S. Inc. also takes pride in helping each and every resident successfully accomplish their goals.

Saint P.A.U.L.S. Residence entered a new era at the end of 2000 to present. Our clients who maintained a clean track record from drugs and alcohol for longer than two years or more and who diligently pressed their limits to successfully graduate job and drug after-care programs began to strongly express their feelings regarding moving to an independent apartment. The board of directors realized the growing need for apartment programs but unfortunately they also realized that those residents were not eligible because they did not meet the age and/or income requirements. The Board and their staff spent long days and nights training those clients the proper interview etiquette and skills in construction, plumbing, culinary and janitorial maintenance.
Consequently, those clients were able to apply for a wide range of jobs, and were successful in securing full time well paid positions in established companies. The CEO personally contacted numerous real estate companies, friends and relatives to obtain affordable apartments. Saint P.A.U.L.S. Inc. continues to check on their client’s progress and encourage them to keep medical and other appointments.
Members of the board also started to work with each client on a weekly basis providing hygiene, counseling and budget management classes for clients who could not attend after-care programs because of pending insurance problems.
As a result, in finding apartments for the self- motivated clients who were able to productively work and relocate, this served as a motivator residents became motivated in helping themselves to become a productive part of the community.
Our residents started to volunteer helping the neighborhood churches and participating in community gardening programs. Our senior citizen veterans finally opened- up to express their feelings about their traumatic experiences in the war; our clients have benefited in exceptional ways, from the programs offered through Black Veterans for Social Justice, Inc. The CEO herself started accompanying some residents to bible study every Friday evening.
Twice a week Saint P.A.U.L.S. Residence tutors a small group of people to help them study for their GED. Once a month our volunteers assist residents in and outside of the community apply for food stamps and health insurance.
